Whatcha Up To?:
Well, not much. See the entire literary community basically takes summers off, a tradition going back to when all the major publishing houses were in New York and all of New York fled the city in summer.
Also, many, many literary magazines are run by colleges who’s students leave for summer too. You may have noticed a monthly Rejections post didn’t go out for August. That’s because I didn’t have any. Not because I don’t have anything out on submission, but because when nobody’s reading, nobody’s rejection or accepting.
Somewhere along the way, people got savvy to the good thing they had going by taking summers off, and the tradition has continued ever since. Hence, summers are excruciatingly slow in the writer-verse. (This is also one of many reasons I don’t put out a July newsletter, there’s simply not much to report).
Now that everyone’s returning to school, to work, and to life, things will begin picking up again. In the meantime, there was a heart-felt piece (that also feels a bit tongue-in-cheek) published in Lit Mag News about rejections you may enjoy reading.
