Protect the Humanities in Montana

PROTECT THE HUMANITIES IN MONTANA

Dear Supporters and Friends,

On April 2nd, Humanities Montana became the latest casualty of budget cuts when we received an email informing us that our federal grant funding, which accounts for 90% of our operating budget, had been terminated immediately. We’ve received these funds every year for over 50 years, and they have been cut off in the middle of our grant contract, which isn’t supposed to end until 2027.

We are devastated but not defeated. Even with this news, we want to be clear that our doors remain open. We have some modest reserves to keep operating while we see how this unfolds nationally, and we will do everything possible to keep humanities alive and funded. But we cannot do this without your support.  Please join us in protecting the humanities in our state by making your gift today. You can give through our secure website, www.humanitiesmontana.org, mail a gift to Humanities Montana, 311 Brantly Hall, Missoula, MT 59812, or scan the QR code below to visit our giving page:
For half a century, Humanities Montana has provided grants and opportunities to all 56 counties that bring writers, poets, artists, and performers to community centers, parks, and educational institutions, including in public, private and homeschool settings, across Big Sky Country. It’s heartbreaking to consider the impact of this cut on arts and culture in our state. Humanities are not a luxury; they are the fabric of our community. A foundation of our democracy.

The humanities have always been vital to overcoming difficult historical periods, and that is precisely what we are experiencing right now. Our need for support is urgent.

Additionally, please contact Montana’s US Senators and Representatives, talk to your friends about why the humanities matter to you, write a letter to the editor, or find creative ways to protect the humanities.

Investing in the public good, our communities, and our neighbors has always been a source of pride for Montanans. With your help, this tradition will continue.

Thank you for standing with Humanities Montana at this critical time. We are in this together.  Jill Baker Executive Director
